BMI Calculator

The BMI Calculator will give you an idea of how your weight compares to common values. Body Mass Index (or BMI) is calculated as your weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of your height (in metres) or BMI = Kg/M2.

BMI Calculator should only be used by adults (pregnant or lactating women should not rely on these BMI readings), and no action should be taken based on its values other than to consult a healthcare provider.

Body mass index (BMI) calculator is a tool that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. A high BMI is associated with an increased risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes in adults.

BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat for most people.

Calculating your body mass index (BMI) is one way of trying to work out whether you are within a healthy weight range.

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is calculated the same way for both adults and children. The calculation is based on the following formulas:

BMI is calculated the same way for both adults and children. The calculation is based on the following formulas:
Measurement Units Formula and Calculation
Kilograms and meters (or centimeters) Formula: weight (kg) / [height (m)]2With the metric system, the formula for BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Because height is commonly measured in centimeters, divide height in centimeters by 100 to obtain height in meters.

Example: Weight = 68 kg, Height = 165 cm (1.65 m)
Calculation: 68 ÷ (1.65)2 = 24.98

Pounds and inches Formula: weight (lb) / [height (in)]2 x 703Calculate BMI by dividing weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703.

Example: Weight = 150 lbs, Height = 5’5″ (65″)
Calculation: [150 ÷ (65)2] x 703 = 24.96

How is BMI interpreted for adults?

For adults 20 years old and older, BMI is interpreted using standard weight status categories. These categories are the same for men and women of all body types and ages.

The standard weight status categories associated with BMI ranges for adults are shown in the following table.
BMI Weight Status
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 Healthy Weight
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0 and Above Obesity

For example, here are the weight ranges, the corresponding BMI ranges, and the weight status categories for a person who is 5′ 9″.

203 lbs or more 30 or higher Obesity

Medically obesity and overweight is defined as a condition when a person is 20% above their ideal weight relative to their height and at such a stage the excess body weight becomes a medical liability and can be termed even as a disorder. Because of the fact that overweight individuals are at a greater risk for serious debilitating conditions such as diabetes, various cardiac disorders, and heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), and even certain kinds of malignant cancer, medically obesity is considered serious even is not defined as a disease in and of itself. Being overweight also places a person at risk for arthritis because of the fact that the excess weight puts a lot of stress and pressure on the joints; this increases their wear and tear and leads to the early onset of arthritis.

Why Healthy Weight Is Important

According to the National Institutes of Health, more than two in three adults are considered overweight and one in three are considered obese. About 17 percent of children and teenagers (ages 2 to 19) are considered obese.

There are many reasons why being a healthy weight is important.

Did you know that a person with a BMI of between 30 and 35 may die two to four years earlier than someone of a healthy weight?

And a person with a BMI of between 40 and 45 may die eight to 10 years earlier.

People who are very underweight may also not live as long as those who are a healthy weight.

But it’s not just about the risk of dying younger, it’s also about your quality of life – or how well you feel. People who are a healthy weight have a lower risk of:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Some types of cancer
  • Kidney disease
  • Back pain
  • Knee pain
  • Infertility
  • Breathing problems
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sleep problems
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Fatty liver disease.

Children who are a healthy weight are less likely to be bullied and to have poor self-esteem and eating disorders.

So, being a healthy weight can help you live longer, reduce your chances of developing chronic disease, and help you get more out of life.
